SASSA Gold Card holders urged to replace their Gold Cards

Millions of South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) beneficiaries are being urged to replace their old SASSA Gold Cards with the new Postbank Black Cards before the latest deadline.

Postbank announced that the final phase of the card replacement process officially begins on 29 April 2026, with beneficiaries needing to switch cards before 31 August 2026.

With millions of South Africans depending on social grants each month, early card replacement could help beneficiaries avoid unnecessary stress, delays, and long queues.

Why Beneficiaries Must Replace Their Gold Cards

According to Postbank, the old SASSA Gold Cards will stop working after the deadline. This means beneficiaries who have not switched to the new black cards may struggle to access their grant payments.

The replacement process forms part of Postbank’s wider migration programme that started in 2024.

Postbank says the new black cards are more secure and designed to improve banking services for grant recipients.

Who Needs To Replace Their Card?

The replacement mainly affects beneficiaries who still receive grants using:

  • SASSA Gold Cards
  • Postbank-linked grant accounts

This includes recipients of:

  • Older Persons Grants
  • Disability Grants
  • Child Support Grants
  • Foster Child Grants
  • Care Dependency Grants

Beneficiaries who already receive grants directly into personal bank accounts may not need a new Postbank card.

Where To Get The New Postbank Black Card

Beneficiaries can collect their new cards at selected retail stores across South Africa.

Participating retailers include:

  • Shoprite
  • Checkers
  • Boxer
  • Pick n Pay
  • Usave
  • Spar

The card replacement process is free.

What Documents Are Needed?

To collect the new card, beneficiaries usually need:

  • A South African ID document or temporary ID
  • Their current SASSA Gold Card
  • The cellphone number linked to their grant account

How To Find A Card Replacement Site

Postbank says beneficiaries can locate nearby replacement sites by dialing: *120*355#

This service helps users find collection points in their province.

Important Warning For Beneficiaries

SASSA and Postbank have warned beneficiaries not to wait until the last minute.

Long queues and delays were experienced during earlier replacement phases, especially after previous deadlines were announced and extended.

Beneficiaries are also reminded:

  • Never share PIN numbers
  • Ignore fake SMS messages
  • Do not pay anyone for card replacement assistance

Will Grants Continue?

Yes. SASSA grants themselves are not ending.

The card replacement only affects how beneficiaries access their money. Government has repeatedly assured beneficiaries that grant payments will continue during the transition period.
