SASSA Strengthens Social Assistance Systems
Recent updates from the Department of Social Development and SASSA show that new systems and grant improvements are helping to strengthen service delivery across the country.

South Africa’s social assistance system continues to play a major role in supporting millions of vulnerable people. For many South Africans, social grants remain a lifeline that helps families afford food, transport, school costs, and basic living expenses.
Social Assistance Receives Most of the Budget
According to the latest information shared by government, social assistance now accounts for 96.7% of the portfolio’s total allocated budget.
This funding supports millions of grant beneficiaries across South Africa, including:
- 12.9 million Child Support Grant beneficiaries
- 4.4 million older persons receiving the Old Age Grant
- 1.1 million people receiving Disability Grants
Government says these grants help reduce:
- Poverty
- Gender inequality
- Income inequality
The social grant system also helps stimulate the broader economy, especially in low-income communities where grants are often used for essential daily spending.
SASSA Expands Biometric Verification System
One of the biggest improvements introduced by SASSA is the rollout of the biometric verification system.
The system was successfully introduced across all 432 SASSA offices by September 2025.
Biometric verification helps improve security by confirming a beneficiary’s identity using personal biometric data such as fingerprints or facial recognition. This aims to reduce fraud and protect grant payments from being accessed unlawfully.
SASSA also confirmed that around 1 million new applications had already been enrolled on the biometric system by the end of March 2026.
Grant Review Process Saves Over R1 Billion
Government also highlighted the intensified grant review process.
According to the information released, the review process saved the national fiscus more than R1 billion.
These savings were reportedly redirected toward other national priorities and service delivery needs.
Grant reviews are important because they help ensure that only qualifying beneficiaries continue receiving assistance.
Queue Management System Expanded
SASSA has also been working to improve conditions at local offices by expanding its Queue Management System.
The system has already expanded from 113 offices to 378 SASSA offices nationwide.
The remaining offices are expected to be completed during the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year.
The upgraded system is expected to help:
- Reduce waiting times
- Improve crowd management
- Speed up service delivery
- Create a better experience for beneficiaries visiting offices
Why These Changes Matter
Millions of South Africans depend on SASSA grants every month. Improvements to security systems, office management, and application processing can help make services faster and safer for beneficiaries.
The latest developments also show government’s continued focus on improving social assistance systems while protecting public funds from fraud and abuse.
For beneficiaries, this could mean:
- Faster processing
- Improved security
- Better service at offices
- More efficient grant administration
As SASSA continues expanding its systems, beneficiaries are encouraged to keep their personal information updated and follow official announcements regarding grant processes and verification requirements.
