Child Grant Suspended – Why and What to do

The Child Support Grant is paid to primary caregivers of children under 18 years of age, to help assist with the expense of raising the child in a lower-income household.

If you were receiving the child grant but the grant has been suspended, you may be wondering why and what you can do about it. Keep reading to find out.

Why has my Child Support Grant been suspended?

Your child grant could have been suspended due to any of the following reasons:

  • The child has turned 18 (the child grant will be paid up until the end of their birthday month)
  • The child has died
  • The child was admitted to a government/ state institution
  • The primary caregiver fails to collect the grant for 3 months in a row
  • The child is no longer in South Africa
  • The child is no longer in your (the primary caregivers) care
  • There is a dispute regarding who the true primary caregiver of the child is (an investigation will be conducted)
  • You do not cooperate with SASSA when the child’s grant is reviewed
  • You commit fraud or provide false information in the grant application

What can I do once my Child Support Grant has been suspended?

SASSA will review your child’s grant to ensure that you meet all of the criteria (see the criteria below). SASSA will notify you, in writing, 3 months before the grant is going to be reviewed. SASSA will fill in an Under Investigation form (U4Form).

SASSA will verify that all the information provided in your child grant application is correct and valid. They will require proof of the child’s identity (so make sure you have their birth certificate or ID document available), they may also check if the child is attending school (if they are of age) and will also verify that you are the child’s primary caregiver.

If you pass the review, the child support grant will be reinstated. If you do not submit all the necessary documents or information, SASSA can put you under investigation and suspend the grant. If your application is suspended or declined, you will be informed in writing.
