Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders can also apply for the SRD Grant

The Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD Grant) was introduced by the government of South Africa during the Covid-19 pandemic, to provide very basic financial relief to South African Citizens, Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders who have insufficient means to support themselves.

In order to apply for the SRD R350 grant, applicants had to meet specific criteria, which include:

  • You must reside within South Africa
  • You must meet any 1 of these criteria:
    • You must be a South African Citizen
    • You must be a Refugee in South Africa
    • You must be an Asylum Seeker in South Africa
    • You must be a Special Permit Holder in South Africa
  • You must be between 18 and 60 years old
  • You must meet the means test, with a income of R624 or less per month
  • You must be unemployed and NOT be receiving financial support from any other source
  • You must have insufficient financial means to support yourself
  • You must NOT be receiving any other social grants
  • You must NOT be contributing towards or eligible for UIF payment
  • You must NOT be receiving a stipend from NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme)

How to apply for SRD Grant as an Asylum Seekers or Special Permit Holder

If you are an Asylum Seeker living in South Africa and you have a valid File Number or Special Permit Holder from Zimbabwe, Angola or Lesotho, you must APPLY HERE

If your permit or file numbers have expired, you must re-apply for the SRD Grant with the new permit number or file number. Your payments for the approved months (when your permit was still valid, will still be processed).

What documents must I submit when I apply for the R350 grant?

SASSA does not require applicants to submit any documents when applying for the SRD grant (
applicants of other grant types are required to submit certain documents). All information is submitted electronically – applicants only need a cellphone number to apply (make sure you have access to this phone number at all times as this is how SASSA will contact you, to provide feedback on your application).

If your SRD grant was declined, you have the right to lodge an appeal with the Department of Social Development. Find out How to submit an appeal for your SRD Grant here. You will need to submit an appeal for each month your grant was declined.

How will my SRD Grant be paid?

If you checked your SRD status (via the link above) and your application has been successful and a pay date has been confirmed, you can collect your grant payment at any Pick ‘n Pay or Boxer store.

You will need your Payment ID (SASSA system-generated number) and cellphone number used to apply for the grant, in order to collect your grant.

If you are not sure what your Payment ID is, you can look up your Payment ID here – you will be required to fill in your asylum seeker File Number or special permit holder Passport Number, as well as the cell phone number you applied with.
