How to submit an SRD Grant Appeal

If you applied for the Covid-19 SRD grant, you received a notification that your application was declined or rejected (read reasons why your SRD grant may have been rejected) and you do NOT agree with the decision, you do have the right to submit an appeal with the Department of Social Development and have your application reassessed.

Keep reading below as we explain when and how to submit your appeal.

When to submit an appeal

You must submit your appeal within 90 days of your application being rejected (if you appeal after 90 days, unfortunately your application will not be reconsidered). Appeals are submitted to the Department of Social Development Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA), and below we will explain step-by-step, how to lodge an appeal.

Before you submit your appeal, make sure you do in fact qualify for the SRD grant (read the criteria for applying for the SRD grant here) and that the information you submitted on your SRD application is accurate and complete.

If the information you submitted on your initial SRD application was incomplete or has changed, you must update and reconfirm your SRD grant application here.

Steps to submit an appeal

1) Visit the SRD Appeal website
2) Type in your ID number and mobile number used in your application.
3) Press “send pin” and await an SMS with a verification pin
4) Enter the verification pin on the appeal website and press “submit”
Your appeal has now been submitted!

How to check your SRD appeal status

Once you have submitted your appeal, via the instructions above, you may want to follow up to check if your appeal has been assessed and your grant application approved. To check the status of your appeal, follow these steps:
1) Visit the SRD Appeal website
2) Type in your ID number and mobile number used in your application.
Your appeal status will now be displayed on your screen.

Please note the following:

  • Appeals must be lodged for each month in which the R350 grant was rejected.
  • The Independent Tribunal will provide an outcome of the appeal within 60 to 90 days from lodging the appeal.
  • The Independent Tribunal will check and revalidate your information (including income or alternative financial assistance), with various databases utilized by SASSA.
  • The Independent Tribunal’s decision on the appeal is final and no further internal recourse will be available.

What happens if your appeal is declined

If your appeal is declined but you strongly believe (and have evidence) that you do indeed qualify for the SRD grant, you may take it to the High Court for a judicial review.

You may also contact an organisation that offers free paralegal advice (such as Black Sash, Legal Aid or Law for All).
