SASSA Payment Delay in January 2024
Another payment delay for SASSA recipients
Just 5 months after a major payment glitch, which left pensioners and other SASSA grant recipients without access to their grant payments, there is yet again another delay with social grant payments.
The Citizen reported that 150 000 SASSA grant beneficiaries have not yet been paid for January 2024. Social grant payments were meant to be released on 3, 4 and January 2024, for the Older Persons Grant, Disability Grant and other grant types, respectively.
What is the cause of the grant payment delay?
According to Paseka Letsatsi, the spokesperson for South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), the glitch was caused by a misinterpretation or not corresponding details, which resulted in the agency not being able to verify the banking details of the beneficiaries.
Recipients experiencing the payment delay are mainly those who have changed from the SASSA gold card to bank-issued cards.
Paseka Letsatsi said that the agency undertakes regular stringent verification checks, including banking details, names, addresses and ID numbers, in order to prevent fraud.
What can grant recipients do to prevent a payment delay?
Grant holders should check that their banking details and personal information are correct and updated. Some recipients may either have misspelled their name or a missed letter. Alternatively, recipients could have accidently inserted an incorrect bank account or left out their branch code.
Recipients must also inform SASSA if their physical address or contact details change.
