Reason for SASSA September 2023 Payment Delay

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has taken to social media (Facebook and Twitter), to inform social grant recipients that Postbank is experiencing technical challenges affecting SASSA social grant payments for the month of September 2023.

SASSA grants were scheduled to be paid between 5 September and 7 September 2023, with the Old Age Grant to be paid on the 5th, however many elderly recipients have not received their grant by the afternoon of 5 September 2023.

sassa notice - postbank is experiencing technical challenges affecting SASSA social grant payments

The notice from SASSA reads “Postbank is experiencing technical challenges affecting SASSA social grant payments”. These intermittent technical issues are making it difficult for some beneficiaries to withdraw their funds from ATM’s and retailers. These technical issues are affecting all grant recipients, including those receiving the SRD R350 grant.

However, they also stated that Postbank’s technical team is working hard to resolve the issue, and they will confirm once the technical issue has been resolved.

Lastly, social grant recipients who use the SASSA Gold Card at Post Office branches, should be able to receive their payments as usual and should not be affected by the above technical issue.

SASSA Payment Delays Are Nothing New

It is becoming the norm for SASSA grant recipients to experience delays in their payments each month – one only has to read the comments on the SASSA social media platforms to see how many recipients are outraged and negatively affect by the payment dates (see below a screenshot of recent comment – names have been covered to protect the identities of commenters).
