SASSA Gold Card Update – Extended Past 31 December 2023

When will SASSA gold card expire?

Postbank issued a statement on their Facebook page to inform grant recipients that expired SASSA Gold Cards will continue to work after December 2023.

This comes after much uncertainty as to what will happen to SASSA gold card holders whose cards expired in 2023.

SASSA previously announced that recipients with gold cards expiring in 2023 should not worry as their card validity would be extended until 31 December 2023 and they should visit Post Offices to renew their cards on specific days.

Important notes regarding the Gold Card

SASSA Gold Cards are NOT expiring

Any social grant recipient with a gold card that has “2023” as the expiry date on the front can continue to use their card beyond 2023. This is a huge relief to millions of recipients who would have to wait in long queues to renew their cards.

Gold Card holders can save costs

Instead of having to visit your nearest Post Office branch to renew your gold card, which may be quite a distance from you (there are only just over 1000 post offices left in South Africa, after many have closed), you can continue using your gold card as per usual.

Gold Card holders will receive their grant payments without delay

Those who have an expired gold card will receive their social grant payments the same as any other gold card holder. SASSA does not anticipate any payment delays on expired cards.

Gold Cards are NOT being replaced

There is much misinformation online about SASSA Gold Cards are being replaced – this is not true, as Postbank is the only bank mandated to replace SASSA Gold Cards. However, SASSA recipients are welcome to change their payment methods to their own personal bank if they wish

Gold Cards offer easy withdrawals

Recipients who use the gold card can withdraw their money from a range of retail stores, including Boxer, Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Usave, Spar, and Shoprite. They can also withdraw their funds from ATMs of their choice. There are many places to collect your social grant, which should reduce the need to stand in long queues at Post Offices or cash pay points.

Gold Card holders can make purchases anywhere they like

If you choose to withdraw your funds from a certain retailer, you are not obligated to make a purchase at that particular store – you can collect your funds and leave if you wish. SASSA beneficiaries should report any retailer or shop that forces them to make a purchase before paying out their SASSA grants.

Other benefits for Gold Card holders

Recipients who make use of the gold card are offered many benefits, including free withdrawals inside retail shops, as well as a free 3-month statements and balance inquiries.
