SASSA Gold Card Renewal – What Happens After 31 December 2023?

What will happen to Gold Cards After 2023?

According to a recent article by Alexandra Abrahams MP, the Shadow Deputy Minister of Social Development, the gold card expiry date may be extended again to avoid SASSA recipients scrambling to renew their cards by 31 December 2023.

There are around 5.3 million SASSA gold cards that are due to be renewed this year, and with less than 3 months for SASSA gold card holders to renew their cards (this only applies to recipients whose cards have expired in 2023), it seems unlikely that Post Offices across the country will be able to issue new cards.

Remember – if your gold card expires after 2023, it will still be valid and does NOT have to be renewed.

Why must I renew my Gold Card?

In March 2023, SASSA announced that recipients of expiring cards may head to their nearest Post Office to renew their cards – this lead to a surge of grant holders applying for their new cards, which the Post Offices could not keep up with. This lead to Minister Lindiwe Zulu extending the expired cards. Now as the date is drawing nearer, many SASSA recipients are worried what will happen when their card expires in 2024.

Can I get my grant paid via a different method?

The alternative option is to open your own personal bank account to have your grant money paid into it – this is a much safer and more convenient method. Many banks offer free accounts – read our article where we compare bank accounts in SA.
