SASSA Grant Payments via Shoprite Money Market – Switch and get up to R100 in vouchers

SASSA Grant recipients can now switch their grant payment to a Shoprite Money Market Account (free of charge) and get up to R100 in vouchers!

Recently, Shoprite announced that SASSA Grant beneficiaries who hold gold cards expiring in the upcoming months, can avoid long queues and payment problems by simply switching to a Shoprite Money Market Account. The Shoprite Money Market Account is the country’s lowest cost, transactional, fully-fledged bank account.

This new way of collecting grant payments aims to put many grant recipients at ease as many SASSA grant recipients were unsure about how they would access their money (due to the South African Post Office being in danger of liquidation).

The Shoprite Money Market Account does not charge grant recipients any fees to send money, grocery vouchers, to buy airtime, electricity, data, or pay bills and groceries from their phone. Another benefit of having a Shoprite Money Market Account as a SASSA Grant recipient is that you can receive up to R100 in vouchers when your first grant payment of more than R800 is paid into your Money Market Account.

What is happening to the South African Post Office (SAPO)?

On 30 March 2023, the Master of the High Court issued a certificate of appointment to the Kaap Vaal Trust. As such, provisional liquidators were appointed at SAPO as a result of SAPO being unable to settle its debts.

Based on the most recent financial statements from 2021 to March 2022, SAPO owes more than R4.4 billion to its creditors, with its debt exceeding its assets by R4 billion.
The National Treasury has granted SAPO R2.4 billion bailout money to use for some of its historical debt.

In October 2022, the head of communications for SAPO, John Kruger stated that 1200 post offices were functioning. However, in March 2023, it was reported that SAPO closed another 92 post offices across the country, with 50 of them being closed by unpaid landlords.

The closure of post offices has affected many by denying them access to critical services. Those affected the most were individuals from rural communities who solely rely on post offices to be the source location from where they can receive their SASSA social grants.

In February 2023, the Communication Workers Union stated that it would take the necessary measures to ensure that no jobs at SAPO were lost. This statement came after SAPO announced that it was contemplating reducing their staff numbers. As such, the union said the proposed retrenchments could see 6000 individuals without jobs, leaving many families without an income.
