The South African government provides various types of grant to the most underprivileged citizens in the country, through South African Social Security Agency (SASSA). If you are one of the more than 16 million people receiving a social grant, you may be wondering how you will get paid or how to change your payment method.

SASSA grants can be paid in cash and collected from specific retailers (Checkers, Shoprite, PicknPay, Boxer, Usave) or can be paid directly into your bank account. If you would like to change your grant payment into your bank account, we will inform you below of the steps to take.

How can I change my SASSA SRD Grant Payment Method?

If you want to change your SRD grant payment banking details, follow these instructions:

  • Visit the official SASSA SRD update banking details page.
  • Insert your South African ID number
  • Wait for an SMS with a unique OTP pin – this will be sent to the mobile phone number with which you registered during application.
  • Enter the OTP pin from the SMS, on to the SASSA SRD website and follow the instructions carefully
  • Select to receive payment into your bank account – make sure that the bank account is in your own name as SASSA cannot pay your grant into another person’s bank account.

If you don’t have a bank account or you choose the “money transfer” option via one of the major banks, please ensure that the mobile phone number on which you received the SMS is registered in your name. SASSA cannot pay your grant into a mobile phone number which is registered to another person.

The new banking details will only be used for future payments, after they have been verified.

How can I change my SASSA Grant Payment Method (non SRD grant)?

Recipients of other types of SASSA grants (not the SRD grant), who would like to have their grant paid into their bank account, must visit their nearest SASSA branch.

Take the following documents with you:

  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of your bank account details, from your bank
  • 3 months bank statements that shows your personal information (your name and account number)

When will my SASSA grant be paid?

SASSA grants are paid out once each month, within the first few days of the month.

The Old Age Grant is always paid first, followed by the Disability Grant, and then the Child Support Grant, and finally the other grant types are paid after these.

The SRD Grant is always paid towards the end of the month, in batches.
