SASSA is introducing a Queue Management System (QMS) to alleviate waiting times

As any SASSA beneficiary would know, visiting a SASSA office to apply or make an enquiry, is a full day event. Many beneficiaries arrive at SASSA offices very early in the morning, before the office even opens, so they can hopefully be attended to that day.

However, there is some good news – SASSA announced that they are rolling out a Queue Management System (QMS) to help reduce the waiting time for beneficiaries to be assisted.

How does the QMS work?

The QMS currently uses a ticketing system – it identifies the services that the applicant requires and then issue a corresponding ticket.

Upon arriving at the SASSA office, the applicant will visit the front desk and provide the official with their ID document (or passport in the case of foreigners). On the online system, the SASSA official will then select the reason for the visit (application, customer care, disability management or payment services). Older people and those who are pregnant will be prioritised.

The system will then generate a ticket, which will be printed and handed to the applicant to wait their turn in the relevant queue.

Applicants will know it is their turn to be attended to, when their ticket number is called over the intercom system.

Take a look at SASSA’s Youtube video on how the QMS works.

How many offices have the QMS and which offices?

As of 30 June 2023, the QMS has been implemented at 43 local SASSA offices, across all provinces.
In the Eastern Cape, it is being implemented at the East Lond, Queenstown, Flagstaff and Bizana local offices.
In the Free State, it is being implemented at the Qwaqwa, Welkom, Smithfield, Sasolburg and Bloemfontein local offices.
In Gauteng, it is being implemented at the Benoni, Pretoria, Roodepoort, Johannesburg, Germiston, Alexandra, Mamelodi, Soshanguve and Sebokeng local offices.
In KwaZulu-Natal, it is being implemented at the Durban and Osizweni local offices.
In Limpopo, it is being implemented at the Seshego and Giyani local offices.
In Mpumalanga, it is being implemented at the Mbombela and Msukaligwa local offices.
In the Northern Cape, it is being implemented at the Upington, Tlhlokomelo, De Aar, Gasegonyana, Springbok, Douglas, Kimberley, Dithakong and Postmasburg local offices.
In the North West, it is being implemented at the Mahikeng, Rustenburg, Jouberton, Ramotshere Moiloa, Kagisano, Maquassi Hills, Moretele and Morokweng local offices.
In the Western Cape, it is being implemented at the Athloe and Gugulethu local offices.

When will the QMS be implemented at other offices?

The Social Development Department indicated that SASSA may need a budget of R52 million to roll out the Queue Management System in offices across the country.

There has not been any indication of when the QMS will be rolled out to other branches, but if the QMS works as it should, it is likely it will be rolled out to other offices.
