SASSA SRD Status “Awaiting Reapplication” – What it means and what to do

The special COVID-19 Social Relief Distress (SRD) grant was formed in May 2020 as a result of the joblessness caused by the Covid pandemic. Two years later, the R350 grant is still helping may of the nations poorest people who do not have financial means to support themselves.

If you applied for the R350 SRD Grant but you get the “Awaiting Reapplication” message when checking your SASSA status this means that you need to reapply for the SRD Covid-19 Grant.

This status means SASSA has not received your application so the only way forward is to make sure you apply for the SRD grant correctly.

First, make sure you meet all the criteria to apply for the SRD Grant, including the age requirement and means test. Find the full list of SRD Grant criteria here.

Once you are sure that you meet all the criteria, the next step is to choose your application method. You can either apply via the SASSA SRD website or via WhatsApp.

Applying for the R350 SRD Grant

To apply via WhatsApp, follow these steps:
Add the Govchat contact number 082 046 8553 to your cellphone. Start by writing “Hello” to the contact and follow the prompts on the message they send you.
You will be requested to provide your person information (make sure you provide correct and accurate information as providing false information will result in you application being declined). You will receive a reference number (keep this number safe), an OTP and a link to complete your grant application.
Visit the link provided and insert your OTP, and thereafter verify your application.
You will be requested to provide your full name and ID number and thereafter to confirm all the details you have provided.

To apply via the SRD website, follow these steps:
Visit the SASSA SRD website and navigate to either the South African ID Holder application page or the Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holder application page.
The application is similar to the WhatsApp application above in that you will be requested to provide your person information (make sure you provide correct and accurate information as providing false information will result in you application being declined).
You will be requested to provide your full name, ID number and cellphone number. Applicants must then request to be sent an SMS to receive their OTP.
You will then insert your OTP and verify your pin.
At the end of the application you will receive a reference number – remember to keep this number safe.

The second stage of the SRD grant application is to read and agree to the terms and conditions of the declaration and consent forms.

SRD Grant payment

Thereafter, you must choose your payment method. If you have a personal bank account and would like to receive your grant money there, you can select the “personal bank account” option. Another method of payment is “cash send” which will allow you to collect your funds at Checkers, Shoprite, PicknPay, Boxer or Usave stores.

If you choose the “personal bank account” option, you will need to provide your banking details, including your bank name (Standard Bank/ Absa/ FNB/ Nedbank), your account number, account type, branch name and lastly to agree to the T&C’s.

Please note:

  • Ensure that the cellphone number you apply with is a number you have access to, as SASSA will use this number to contact you if need be.
  • If you select to get paid into your bank account, make sure it is your own personal bank account in your own name.
  • You will not be requested to submit any documents. Instead, SASSA will run various verification checks to make sure that you do qualify for this grant.
